Zero Hours Key Feature: There is no guaranteed minimum number of hours. The employer has no obligation to offer work, and the worker has no obligation to accept work offered.

UK National Minimum Wage (April 2026): £12.71/hour (21+), £10.85/hour (18-20), £8.00/hour (under 18)
? For zero-hours workers, overtime typically means enhanced rates for unsociable hours (evenings, weekends, bank holidays).

🏖️ Holiday Pay

Legal Requirement: Zero-hours workers are entitled to 5.6 weeks' paid holiday per year (pro-rata to hours worked). This is typically paid using the 12.07% accrual method.
? 12.07% accrual means 12.07% is added to each payment to cover holiday entitlement. Alternatively, you can allow workers to request paid leave when they don't work.
? The 12-month period used to calculate holiday entitlement. Most UK businesses use 1 April – 31 March (tax year). If not specified, defaults to 1 January – 31 December.
? Only applicable if workers can request paid holiday. How much notice must they give?

🥼 Sick Pay & Pension

? Zero-hours workers qualify for SSP from day one of sickness absence, regardless of earnings. SSP is paid at the lower of 80% of average weekly earnings or the flat rate (currently £123.25/week), for up to 28 weeks.
? Zero-hours workers qualify for auto-enrolment if they earn over £10,000/year and are aged 22+. If they don't qualify initially, they'll be enrolled once they meet criteria.

Zero Hours Notice: Because there's no guaranteed work, notice periods for casual workers are typically shorter than permanent staff.
