What Is an Executor Information Pack?

When someone dies, their executors have to find out what the person owned, what they owed, who needs to be told and where every document is kept. Without a clear record, that often means weeks of searching through paperwork, contacting dozens of organisations and hoping nothing has been missed.

An Executor Information Pack solves that. It is a single, organised place to record:

  • Your bank and savings accounts, pensions, investments and Premium Bonds
  • Property, mortgages, insurance policies and any debts
  • Regular payments and subscriptions that will need cancelling
  • Digital and online accounts, and what you would like done with them
  • Key contacts — executors, attorneys, solicitor, accountant and people to notify
  • Funeral wishes, pets, and where your will and important documents are kept

It is a private record you keep yourself. There are no witnesses and no legal formalities — just clear information that helps the people you leave behind.

A will decides who inherits and is legally binding. A letter of wishes is non-binding guidance for executors and trustees. An Executor Information Pack is the practical inventory of what you have and where it is. The three are different documents that work together.▼ Tap below to read more

Will vs Letter of Wishes vs Executor Information Pack

These three documents are often confused, but each does a different job:

  • A will is a legal document. It decides who inherits your estate, appoints your executors and can name guardians for children. It is binding when signed and witnessed correctly.
  • A letter of wishes is non-binding guidance that sits alongside a will or trust. It explains how you would like things handled — for example who should receive sentimental items, or your reasons for a decision.
  • An Executor Information Pack is the practical map. It does not give anything away. It simply records what you own, what you owe, who to contact and where every document, account and key is kept.

Put simply: the will directs, the letter of wishes guides, and the pack shows your executors where everything is. Completing this pack does not replace making a will — if you don't yet have one, see our Last Will & Testament and Letter of Wishes templates.

The pack covers 12 sections: personal and identity details, medical and care wishes, will and legal documents, key contacts, accounts/assets/policies/liabilities, employer and benefits, regular payments, digital accounts, pets, funeral wishes, household access and storage, and a completion and review section.▼ Tap below to read more

🎯

What's Included in the Pack

The pack is organised into 12 clear sections so nothing is missed:

  • Personal & identity details — names, address, NI and tax reference locations, where certificates are kept
  • Medical & care wishes — GP, NHS number, organ donation, location of any living will
  • Will & legal documents — where the original will is, your solicitor, letter of wishes and LPAs
  • Key contacts — executors, attorneys, solicitor, accountant, adviser and people to notify
  • Accounts, assets, policies & liabilities — banks, savings, pensions, investments, property, insurance and debts
  • Employer, income & benefits — including benefits that must be stopped
  • Regular payments & subscriptions — what needs cancelling and how
  • Digital assets & online accounts — a personal assets log, with your wishes for each
  • Pets & their care
  • Funeral wishes — burial or cremation, any pre-paid plan, music and readings
  • Household, access & document storage — where keys and documents are kept
  • Completion & review — where the pack is stored and when to review it

You can add as many entries as you need in the contacts, accounts, subscriptions and digital lists.

Keep the pack somewhere your executors can reach without probate, tell them where it is, and review it once a year. Never write passwords or PINs in it — keep those separately and note their location. The gov.uk Tell Us Once service notifies most government departments at once.▼ Tap below to read more

🔐

How to Store It & Keep It Up to Date

  • Store it sensibly — somewhere your executors can reach without needing probate, and not in a bank safe deposit box.
  • Tell your executors it exists and where to find it; you may want to give a copy to your solicitor.
  • Never record passwords or PINs in the pack. Keep them in a password manager or sealed note and record only where to find them — this follows the Law Society's "personal assets log" guidance.
  • Review it once a year, and after any major change such as moving home, changing bank or updating your will.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Executor Information Pack?

An Executor Information Pack is a single, organised record of everything your executors or family will need to deal with your affairs — your assets, accounts, pensions, investments, insurance, debts, regular payments, digital accounts, key contacts, funeral wishes, and where your will and important documents are kept.

It can save your executors weeks of searching at a difficult time. It is a private record, not a will, and works alongside your will.

Is an Executor Information Pack the same as a will?

No. A will is a legal document that decides who inherits your estate and names your executors and any guardians. An Executor Information Pack does not give anything away and does not replace a will — it is a practical map that tells your executors what you have and where to find it.

Many people complete both: a will to direct their estate, and this pack so their executors can actually locate everything.

What's the difference between a will, a letter of wishes and an Executor Information Pack?

A will is legally binding and decides who inherits. A letter of wishes is non-binding guidance for your executors and trustees. An Executor Information Pack is the practical inventory — where your accounts, policies, documents and password locations are.

The three work together: the will directs, the letter of wishes guides, and the pack shows your executors where everything is.

What does the Executor Information Pack include?

The pack covers 12 sections: personal and identity details; medical and care wishes; your will and legal documents; key contacts; accounts, assets, policies and liabilities; employer, income and benefits; regular payments and subscriptions; digital assets and online accounts; pets; funeral wishes; household access and document storage; and a completion and review section.

You can add as many entries as you need in each list.

Do I need a solicitor?

No. This is a personal record you complete yourself — there are no legal formalities and no witnesses are required. Many people complete it in well under an hour.

You may wish to speak to a solicitor separately about your will or a Lasting Power of Attorney if your affairs are complex.

Does it need signing or witnessing?

No witnesses are needed. The pack is a private record, not a will or a deed, so there are no signing formalities — you simply sign and date the final page to confirm the information is accurate and note when you last reviewed it.

It is your will that must be signed and witnessed correctly. This pack sits alongside your will and points your executors to where it is kept.

What if UK law changes after I purchase?

You receive free lifetime updates — no subscription required, no monthly fees, ever.

We monitor UK law changes and update templates accordingly. When we release an updated version, it appears free in your My Templates page. No extra charges. No recurring fees.

Is this really £20 one-time, or will I be charged monthly?

£20 one-time. That's it. No subscriptions, no recurring fees, no "free trial" traps.

Here's what we don't do: Other sites advertise "free templates" — you spend time filling one in, then they ask for your card for a "free trial" that charges monthly when you forget to cancel. Worse, many are US-based and won't suit UK situations. (Read about the scam)

We're different: £20 upfront for the pack you actually need. Build it, preview it, pay only when you're happy. Own it forever with free lifetime updates. Based on UK law.
